The Meeting in Haarlem, November 2013

Haarlem, November 2013. The Report

An account of the programme in Haarlem – The Netherlands, November 2013

Monday, November 4
Arrival of teachers and students in Haarlem.
The students were picked up by their host families.
The groups that arrived early had the opportunity to discover the city centre by themselves.

Tuesday, November 5
The students and teachers assembled in the auditorium of The Schoter in the morning. After being welcomed by the school management the programme started with ”getting to know each other activities”.

After these activities the students went to work in international groups. At their own school each country had prepared two themes concerning the Modern European City Quarter. The themes were Leisure time, Transportation, Energy and Education. Within the groups students of different nationalities discussed their input for the final presentation of their subject and decided upon what should be in their mutual presentation. A beginning was made with the final presentation itself.

In the afternoon students and teachers went on a cycling tour in Haarlem. During this tour several places of interest were visited. For example the Frans Hals Museum with an extensive art collection from the Golden Age and Windmill ‘De Adriaan’ Places visited related to the project’s theme: The Ripperda Kazerne, an old cavelery barack that has been turned into appartments, office space and a daycare centre and the Raaks area in the city centre, where an old church converted into a brewery is standing next to a modern cinema, shops and appartments.

Wednesday, November 6
A visit to Amsterdam. The walking tour started at the Eye film museum, a building remarkable for its architecture. From this museum the students had a good view of the Amsterdam waterfront while listening to an explanation about the new developments of this part of the city.

The rest of the day was spent with a walking tour through Amsterdam and a canal boat trip.
